Last month we had some spam attacks on our TDFWIKI. We blocked the new accounts and deleted the pages manually. A really big thank goes to cloph as he helped me and disabled the manual registration for new users when I wasn’t available. 🙂
After that we had modified again our Title-Blacklist to prevent pages create with well known spam titles (mostly including phone numbers for Canada and USA, some words like phone support, printer assistance, etc.).
Now we should improve our “abuse filter” which checks every edit for spammers who try to add phone numbers to the page content itself. Sadly we realized that it prevented sophie to add and create the recordings of the BoD calls, so it got deactivated again. This is still on my todo list.
After rereading my “unread” planet blog post – in this case Charles’ Losing the Art of Wiki , I added as suggested by beluga / buovjaga to add yet another extension: an improvement to the RecentChanges page.
At the end of the year I started to cleanup many stuff in the wiki.
First I re-installed again the extension UserMerge to merge wiki users on request and did merge a user. For the case you want to merge some users, simply ping me in IRC, write me a mail or request it directly on my wiki page. 😉
A seldom spam post was quickly deleted again.
Moreover I started to fix dead links. Most links were simply moved (Sun, Oracle, Apache did make really a mess with their links) or even in our own infrastructure… Moreover my bot ran through many links to switch the http links to the securer https variants.
Moreover I try to finish a few patch sets for our Bugilla-Mediawiki-integration extension to push them upstream.
… do not only happen in LibreOffice. 😉
Although the Wikimedia Foundation has a really big CI (even for extensions which do only have a repository at WMF), they introduced a regression and released yet another bug fix…
MW1.24.6 was quickly updated. Luckily such a fix – in this special case – is really fast installed.
At Friday the Wikimedia Foundation released a security update for all supported MediaWiki versions. I quickly applied the security update to our wikis. 🙂
And finally it is possible to embed a YouTube video in the TDFWIKI. 🙂
Check https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.1 for the nice presentation about Miklos change embedding the source for the mail merge feature in Writer.
If you want to embed a video in a wiki page, too, then read the newly created FAQ page.
Since the last MediaWiki major update some “tabs” above the editing text fields were “gone”. I was asked by Pierre-Yves if these can be restored. Actually I had no clue and by accident I found out that our friends at WikiApiary do have them activated by default. So it is indeed possible. The hint on their mailing list didn’t helped very much except getting the LocalSettings.config (the config file of MediaWiki storing all custom options). At the end I was playing in the user preferences in the wiki itself and found out that it can be turned on in the user preferences under Editing: “Enable side-by-side preview“.
And the result looks like that: (the red border displays the reappearance of the tabs)
Hopefully I can improve your wiki experience. 😉
I wanted really to improve our actual category system on the TDF wiki, but there were many reasons I did not. One of the reasons was that we don’t have any tools installed which help the user (including myself) and you have to do it “the old way” using the source code knowing the actual category.
We had already the Extension:Gadgets installed and thus I simply imported the description and the Wikipedia Gadget HotCat. 🙂 It is disabled by default. You simply have to go to [[Special:Preferences]], click on the tab Gadgets and activate HotCat.
Afterwards when visiting a page you will see at the bottom a Plus sign (+). When you click that you can easily (with suggestions!) add new categories. 🙂
For more information about this Gadget simply read Wikipedia’s manual.
If you want more or other features installed, simply ping me. Most are very easy to install and I’m very happy if I can help you to improve our wiki. 😉
